As the chief patron of a constitutional amendment that would have required the state to pay the retirement contributions established by the Board of the Virginia Retirement System (SJR 371), I read your editorial, "State pension: Passing the buck" with great interest. It's gratifying to see a newspaper with the stature of the Times-Dispatch informing the public on one important fact: Public employees did not create the current underfunding of the VRS.

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA) -- The Virginia State Crime Commission is considering adopting a version of Caylee's Law, which would make it a felony for a parent or guardian to fail to report a child missing within 24 hours.

State Sen. Janet Howell has received 400 emails from constituents all urging her to pass the law.  Howell, the commission chair, said upon reviewing the state code they discovered there is no requirement for reporting missing children.  A bill to change that would likely be introduced in January.

RESTON - Candidates running for 2011's election on November 8, including Senator Janet Howell, welcomed Democratic Party volunteers, supporters and other members of the community to the grand opening of their Reston headquarters.

Delegate Ken Plum, Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins and Hunter Mill School Board Candidate Pat Hynes will join Senator Howell in the Reston office.
